Diversity and Equity at Minnesota State Colleges and Universities
The Diversity and Equity Division’s purpose is to provide quality services to and support for the institutions and offices of Minnesota State Colleges and Universities. The division focuses on policies and services designed to foster a diverse faculty, staff and student body.
Under the direction of the chancellor, the division is responsible for managing and coordinating the policies, procedures and programs that govern affirmative action, diversity and equal opportunity. The division consults, advises, trains and provides policy development in the areas of non-discrimination investigations, diversity, multiculturalism and affirmative action.
The Diversity and Equity Division also engages in strategic and limited outreach to business, community and civic and educational organizations with most of the effort going to support campuses.

Inclusive Excellence Grant Recipients 2015-2016
The purpose of the grants is to support and encourage programs and activities that are having a measurable impact on the access, opportunity and success of students from underrepresented groups in a systematic fashion so all Minnesotans have access to an extraordinary education. We received twenty-five grant proposals from colleges and universities throughout the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system.
The following proposals were awarded an Inclusive Excellence Grant for the 2015-2016 Academic Year
“American Indian Culturally Based Mathematics and Geospatial-Technology”, Bemidji State University:
This project will research and develop American Indian culturally based mathematics and geospatial-technology curriculum and then imbed the curriculum into mathematics classes at Leech Lake Tribal and Community College, White Earth Tribal and Community College, and Bemidji State University. This culturally based curriculum is intended to improve American Indian student performance while simultaneously exposing non-Indian students to American Indian cultures and mathematics.
“Data analysis on student persistence and completion”, Mesabi Range College:
Mesabi Range College will utilize this grant to conduct data analysis on student persistence and completion. This process will include engaging the college community in a discussion of what the data reveal about student expectations, developmental and intellectual needs, and the challenges students may face to complete and persist in college. The long term goal is to be able to use a data-drive decision making process to set sustainable strategies for the college to address under-served students and communities’ needs in relationship to student success.
“Teachers of Tomorrow”, Minnesota State University, Mankato:
The purpose of the Teachers of Tomorrow program is to recruit, retain, and support students from traditionally under-served communities who will matriculate into teacher candidates. This research project will seek to analyze students’ academic progress in direct relation to retention activities. The research agenda consists of measuring students’ participation in retention activities such as coaching for success, peer mentoring, 1-on-1 professional advising, undergraduate research, etc. Anticipated results may increase student confidence, sense of belonging, and academic stability that will support their persistence to graduation and completion.
“First Year Experience and Reading Strategies”, North Hennepin Community College:
North Hennepin Community College will design a curriculum combining First Year Experience (FYE) and Reading Strategies II. It will be piloted as a 3-credit course with embedded FYE principles that meet the learning outcomes for both courses while preparing students to enroll in 1000 level courses after successful completion. The proposal consists of designing an Academy that introduces the students to four different subject areas. Faculty from other disciplines will provide students with an experience enhances their learning by allowing them to make connections between the curriculum and a typical college experience. Advisors and Career Counselors will also participate to help them set and achieve their college and career goals.
“A two-way approach to addressing poverty”, Rochester Community and Technical College:
RCTC will engage its campus community using a two-way approach to deepen their understanding of poverty. This approach includes education and an awareness campaign across the institution. In addition, this grant will support the college in providing direct services in the form of academic success coaching, peer mentoring, and tutoring, as well as community services to students in need.
